The Wide Bay Water Corporation Scientific Services Laboratory is one of Queensland’s only regional based NATA accredited water and wastewater testing laboratories.

The facility, housed in Wide Bay Water Corporation's Ellengowan Street depot incorporates the most up-to date equipment and processes in the industry. The services initially designed for Fraser Coast Regional Council are now available to the general public and commercial operators.

The laboratory is equipped to carry out and extensive range of analytical testing on a wide range of samples which include but are not limited to, potable waters, waste waters, environmental waters, ground waters and surface waters.

The scientific services team of chemists and microbiologist have extensive experience in the water and wastewater industry and are dedicated to providing the highest quality of analytical work and customer service.

All activities and procedures are based on relevant guidelines as recommended by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and National Health and Medical Research Council (NHMRC) Australian Drinking Water Guidelines.

All analyses at the Wide Bay Water Corporation Laboratory are carried out in accordance with published methods such as APHA 'Standard Methods for the Examination of Water and Wastewater' and relevant Australian Standards.

All tests and work procedures are described in a fully documented quality system which has been accredited by NATA to comply with the requirements of ISO/IEC 17025:2005 – General requirements for the competence of testing and calibration laboratories.

Analytical services – chemistry

The chemistry laboratory is staffed by a team of highly skilled and experienced staff who can offer competent advice, efficient processing of samples and interpretation of results to clients.

The laboratory has a large range of high quality scientific equipment such as Flow Injection Analyser, Atomic Absorption Spectrophotometer and UV-Vis Spectrophotometer.

Some of the services offered by the lab include:-

  • Water Treatment Plant performance monitoring.
  • Reticulated water quality monitoring.
  • Monitoring the water quality in the major water storages such as Lake Lenthall.
  • Environmental investigations and monitoring of creeks, bores and dams in the region.
  • Wastewater Treatment Plant (WWTP) performance monitoring.
  • Effluent Reuse monitoring of bores and surface waters.
  • Analysis of groundwater bores associated with WWTP’s to assess possible contaminants.

Some of the standard physical and chemical testing conducted on a routine basis include:-

  • pH, Conductivity, Dissolved Oxygen, Colour and Turbidity
  • Alkalinity, Hardness, Chloride and Sulphate
  • Nutrient analysis (Ammonia, Phosphate, Nitrate & Nitrite)
  • Metals (Copper, Iron, Manganese and Zinc)
  • Biological and Chemical Oxygen Demand

Analytical services – microbiology

The microbiology laboratory is managed by an experienced microbiologist with extensive experience servicing the water sector, is a full member of the Australian Society for Microbiology (MASM) and a member of the Australian Water Association.

All analytical methods carried out by the microbiology laboratory are based on the Australian Standards for Water Microbiology and are accredited by NATA.

Typical monitoring parameters include;

  • Escherichia coli
  • Thermotolerant (faecal) coliforms
  • Heterotrophic colony count
  • Pseudomonas aeruginosa
  • Enterococci
  • Coliform speciation

The Microbiology department can offer expertise in the Australian Drinking Water Guidelines (2004) and how your unique monitoring program can best comply with the guidelines.

Sampling services

Your analytical results are only as accurate as the samples received at the laboratory.

Proper sample collection, preservation and transportation are critical.

Our team of experienced samplers are available to give advice and training regarding the collection of a variety of different sample types.

Wide Bay Water Scientific Services provides all appropriately preserved and labelled sample containers free of charge for all samples submitted to our laboratory.

Our team of experienced samplers have dedicated sampling vehicles and are available to collect samples on behalf of our clients to ensure the integrity of your samples.

Water quality and technical advisory service

Our experienced team of chemists and microbiologist have an extensive working knowledge of water and wastewater treatment processes. We can offer assistance in the interpretation of results and in the design of monitoring programs and can offer a consultancy service in various projects such as;

  • Water treatment plant performance
  • Waste water treatment plant performance
  • Reticulated water monitoring
  • Environmental investigations and monitoring of creeks, bores and dams.
  • Water quality risk management (HACCP)
  • Water sampler training
